Whenever the Williams brothers gather, there's sure to be no shortage of tall tales. Half of the late Vernon and Clentell Williams' eight children have worked for Alabama Power (and their only daughter's husband worked for the company, too). Through 160 years of combined service, the brothers became known to customers from Alex City, Anniston and Ashland to Dadeville, Geneva, Sylacauga and Talladega. Mention their names to local business office representatives and you're sure to get a smile or even a "they're a hoot" in reply. On March 31, a 51-year span of Williams brothers employment will be broken with the retirement of Local Operating Lineman (LOL) Elvin, who's better known in the field as "Booger." It all began with Morris in 1965 when he was hired as a laborer for $1.58 per hour. Edsel was hired as a laborer several months later, having to wait until he turned 18. Howard came on in 1966, then Elvin in 1970. Elvin, 64, leaves Alabama Power with nearly 46 years under his tool belt, edging out Edsel, 68, who left with 44.8 years of service. Morris, 70, worked 38.2 years before retiring. Howard, 72, retired after 32 years. Together, they are a living local operating lineman history book, easily recalling just how much their occupation has changed during nearly 25 WILLIAMS BROTHERS WORKED COMBINED 160 YEARS LOL Legacy Williams brothers: Elvin, Edsel, Morris and Howard.
