Nearly a century ago, wealthy Coca-Cola bottler Walter Bellingrath was told to get some rest and relaxation for his health. His Mobile doctor knew Bellingrath admired a rugged camp along the Fowl River, and recommended his patient purchase that 25-acres and a couple of cabins used by sawmill workers. Over the next two decades, Bellingrath and his wife, Bessie, created a showplace on 900 acres that grew into the famous gardens bearing their name and bringing more than 110,000 visitors to Alabama every year.
