8 Light Shelter, Project Lifesaver and YMCA Strong Kids, among other nonprofit organizations. "I get so much out of being an Energizer. It makes me feel so good helping others." "We bring canned goods to each meeting," Taylor said. "Once, we collected three grocery carts and two boxes of cans. The back of my car was absolutely loaded down when I took the cans to Jessie's Place in Birmingham." Jasper's Jackie Simmons is most known for her talents in selling Priester's pecan pies, her chapter's major fundraiser. Simmons, the spouse of Charlie Gilliland, didn't work for the company, but has always relished working behind the scenes to help others. She volunteers four hours monthly at the Jasper Community Foundation. Chapter Secretary Simmons has been a Jasper officer for 20 years, lending her skills in organizing many golf tournaments and yard sales. Her golf sponsor contacts came in handy the first year Jasper Energizers sold pies, when Simmons sold 24 cases of pecan pies at $100 each. She's worked just as hard since then selling the baked goods, with Gilliland delivering the pies to customers. Simmons' satisfaction comes from knowing that, with these efforts, members yearly provide a $1,000 nursing scholarship to Bevill State Community College, as well as healthcare for the needy and donations to Jasper-based charities. State Energizers Coordinator Don Franklin has served for 12 years as a liaison between the company and retirees. He daily takes calls from retirees who inquire about benefits, contact numbers and other information. "I listened to a lady for about 30 minutes one day," Franklin said. "I saw her three weeks later and she said, 'I needed someone to talk to that day, and you were there.' Energizers builds that camaraderie with our retirees." BUILDING ON EMPLOYEES' LEGACY OF SERVICE TO ALABAMA Carolyn Feltus, administrative assistant to Mobile Division Vice President Mike Saxon, serves the Mobile Energizers as part of her job. She assists with their meetings, luncheons and procurement of speakers. She attends the meetings and all Energizers activities. Feltus, a Sam Booker Award winner for her service to the Mobile Chapter, calls herself a future Energizers member. "When you go to Energizers events and activities, they are always smiling and talking about what they do, where they've traveled and many other interesting things," Feltus said. "It's very inspiring to me. Any of us who are active employees should aspire to be a part of Energizers when we retire. If not for them, there wouldn't be us. These people are the ones who made Alabama Power the successful company that it is today." To join Energizers and experience a more fulfilling, fun retirement, call Franklin at 205-257-2473 or 205- 937-5848.
