7 Employees 'Recommitting to Target Zero' in 2017 Alabama Power's 2017 safety theme "Recommiing to Target Zero" is built around taking a "proactive" as opposed to a "reactive" approach, so the setbacks of 2016 won't become a paern. "I'm asking us to recommit to being safe and refocus on Target Zero," said CEO Mark Crosswhite, who expressed the gravity of the situation by assuming the role of chairman of the Central Safety Commiee. "I want to be hands-on and I want employees to know I'm listening," he said. Both the new theme and 2017 Safety Plan are driven by results from Alabama Power's first Safety Culture Survey and the Fall Safety Planning Meeting. "It's a commitment to each other and a reminder to remain our brother's and sister's keepers," said Casey Shelton, System Council U-19 business manager for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. "Target Zero isn't about the numbers; it's about each and every one of us." "Target Zero is our philosophy for working every day, every job, safely," said Jeff Peoples, vice president for Human Resources and Ethics. "For over 10 years, it has been instrumental in helping achieve a safer workplace. To keep improving, we must refocus and recommit to Target Zero. This means identifying risks, maintaining a safe work environment and being safe for our families and friends." Safety, Crosswhite said, "is more important than productivity, more important than the budget and more important than geing the lights on. Nothing comes before the safety of our employees and customers." While there is a renewed commitment to Target Zero, Crosswhite emphasized "it's not about statistics and the number of injuries. That's just the way we measure performance. Target Zero is much bigger than that. Fundamentally, it's about making sure each and every member of the Alabama Power family – you and me – goes home safely each day." by Gilbert Nicholson TARGET ZERO
