20 "I was probably in a motel more than I was at home last year," Bishop said. "I'm a firm believer that you need to be on site every day to make sure the roof meets the client's needs, and to keep the employees and the public safe. Employees don't stop doing business just because we're working on the roof." When Property Services decided to launch a companywide roofing program in 2005, Bishop was asked to tackle the job because of his previous experience as an inspector in the company's power plant construction organization. Before that time, each division was responsible for roofing its own facilities, which led to many inconsistencies in the quality of materials used. Since then, projects have been coordinated for all six divisions, Fossil and Hydro Generation, and Transmission, as well as at Corporate Headquarters. Many of the employees directly affected agree that centralizing the roofing program was the most effective option for the company. "The GSC has more than 800,000 square feet of rooftops, and Bruce has done an exceptional job developing a program that protects the integrity of our roofs," said General Services Facilities Superintendent Mark Culwell. "Our rooftops are a great deal more complicated than residential applications. We have roof- mounted equipment that number in the hundreds that require constant maintenance throughout the year. With his knowledge of roof systems, Bruce has been able to identify multiple warranty claim issues at the GSC that would have gone unnoticed until the roof leaked or the warranty had run out." Western Division Facilities Superintendent Mike Dodd observed how Bishop's team roofed the Haleyville, Jasper and Tuscaloosa offices, and the 4th Street Facilities Building. "Bruce treats a job like it's his own house," said Dodd. "He stays on top of the contractors and makes sure the job is done right, and we all respect him for that." Julie Hooper, project manager, General Services – Property Services, attributes the roofing program's success to Bishop's around-the- clock commitment. "Bruce is unmatched in his knowledge of roof systems, installation and maintenance," said Hooper. "Without Bruce, I do not believe the program would be as extensive as it is today – reaching across department lines and helping and supporting all of Alabama Power, as well as SCS and its affiliates in the state. It is because of his dedication that we have such a successful program." Bishop has headed program since 2005
