Coastal Kids Quiz Teaches Students About
State's Unique Ecology
For 14 years, fih-graders in Mobile and Baldwin
counties have learned about coastal Alabama's ecological
environment through the Coastal Kids Quiz, an exciting,
friendly competition. The event is organized by the
Alabama Coastal Foundation in partnership with the
Project CATE Foundation. Both of these nonprofits are
dedicated to conservation efforts and education.
The Coastal Kids Quiz helps students discover the
environmental aspects of living on the Gulf Coast by
teaching them about bays and estuaries, as well as plant
and animal life unique to the area. The teams that win
first, second and third place receive small scholarships,
as do the teachers involved. More than $90,000 in
scholarships have been awarded.
"The event really does get them to focus on the science
behind how to be a good conservationist in coastal
Alabama," said Mark Berte, executive director of the
Alabama Coastal Foundation. "In coastal Alabama, in
particular, our environment is tied to our economy, so the
more we have our students think about that and want
to do something, the more they'll want to protect it for
future generations."
A grant from the Alabama Power Foundation helped
fund the 2016 Coastal Kids Quiz. Volunteers from
the Alabama Power Service Organization served as
timekeepers, scorekeepers and moderators, and served
lunch and refreshments to participants.
