66 The Alabama Power Service Organization is a nonprofit volunteer organization that includes Alabama Power, Southern Nuclear, SouthernLINC and Southern Company Services employees and their families. The mission of APSO is to improve the quality of life of Alabamians by developing and supporting charitable projects that promote the core values of Alabama Power's charitable giving efforts. MILLER Across the state, chapters of the Alabama Power Service Organization worked hard on back-to-school efforts to help prepare Alabama's students for a great school year. The chapter based at Miller Steam Plant was no exception. It collected donations of school supplies for its annual giveaway. The chapter also took food donations to Backyard Blessings to assist with its community outreach. Backyard Blessings, a nonprofit organization based in Sumiton, works with local communities to provide bags of food to children in need each week. They discreetly supply children with nonperishable foods like juice, pudding and microwaveable macaroni and cheese every Friday so they will have food over the weekend. Backyard Blessings states in its mission that "by eliminating hunger, we hope to improve the health, well-being, and education of our children." It has been proven that children who lack proper nourishment have lower test scores and more behavioral problems in school. The Miller community gave away essential supplies such as notebooks, pencils and more to kids in need. Backyard Blessings began using the food donations provided by the chapter when the nonprofit kicked off its backpack giveaways on September 1. All parties involved agree that the joint effort has been a success. Using slogans such as "pudding and pencils" and "notebooks and noodles" generated plenty of donations. Approximately 20 APSO volunteers distributed the supplies to four schools – Brookeville, Corner, Bagley and West Jefferson – to support those with low incomes. "It's just a fun time," said Miller APSO board member Elizabeth Shumate. Her chapter always looks forward to bringing smiles to children's faces and helping them start the school year right.
