Angels of America's Fallen Expands
Program With Alabama Power
Foundation Grant
Founded by an Alabama Army National Guard veteran,
Angels of America's Fallen (AOAF) is a nonprofit
organization serving the children of fallen military
service members and first responders through
mentorship and engagement in sports, technology and
the arts. Support from AOAF mentors is long-term and
continues through age 18 so that children who have lost
parents have access to positive adult role models during
their formative years, leading to improved social skills,
test scores and chances for success. Children in the
program gain access to many creative outlets, from sports,
music and art to baking lessons and horseback therapy.
AOAF supports more than 325 kids nationwide. Currently,
23 Alabamians are enrolled in this program and more
than 200 others are on a waiting list. A 2016 grant from
the Alabama Power Foundation helped to offset coaching
and instruction costs for Alabama enrollees, enabling the
program to expand and accept more children.
"The grant allowed kids in Alabama to get off the wait list
and into healing and healthy activities," said founder Joe
Lewis. "Otherwise, these kids would be suffering from
invisible wounds alone."
