The reporter noticed a commotion near
the river's eastern bank, about a mile
and a half above the Broad Street wharf.
He witnessed a huge black mass that
appeared to be a monster rising from the
deep water.
"The sight," the newsman reported,
"was a thrilling one and well-calculated to
alarm anyone."
"But on closer examination, he thought
that maybe the sea monster was only 'a
great mass of leaves and weeds' that an
accumulation of gases beneath the mass
threw up from the bottom of the river,"
Crownover said.
ereaer, the "sea monster" faded into
obscurity and the Coosa reclaimed its
tranquility. However, "Scuba divers and
fishermen today still talk about seeing fish
as large as men," Crownover said.
ankfully, they are not large enough to
consume a man, his weapons and a deer.
