Water whys
Keith and Amy Richards visit their Smith Lake
getaway year-round. Even as fall days grow chillier,
the Richards enjoy their time at the lake, whether
it's mountain biking, hiking, fishing or just curling
up on the couch and watching movies.
In the wonderful photo across these two pages,
the Richards's twin daughters Charley, le, and
Margaux, right, sandwich first cousin Whitley
Richards as they hang on tightly during one of
summer's last hurrahs on the tube.

• For others when it's fall, bird is the word, or,
more accurately, birding. Now is a terrific time
to spot all kinds of fowl on and near our lakes,
from bald eagles to osprey, from bluebirds to red-
headed woodpeckers.
• For more ideas on spending time on and near
the water this time of year, check out our Best of
the Lakes feature.
• Fall is also the ideal time to plan construction
and maintenance projects on shorelines and docks.

• And just to get you in the mood for Halloween,
we tell a few tall tales from the Coosa River.
• We also offer the heartwarming story of the
"Unbreakable Spirit Run" on Neely Henry Lake, the
brainchild of two Alabama Power employees to help
families with children who have rare disabilities.
Enjoy!
