MILLS A SOUTHEAST LEADER FOR 25 YEARS
by Donna Cope
There's nothing John Mills loves more than the
Energizers, a lile competition and a slice of
good ol' caramel cake.
Indeed, Mills has never refused
the call to a Southeast Energizers
auction and the promise of
homemade goodies – so much so,
he once paid $275 for a caramel
cake.
But it wasn't just any cake.
"Elizabeth and Warren Kelly
were a Southern Division
retiree couple who joined our
Southeast chapter," he said.
"Elizabeth made two loaf pans
of wonderful pound cake.
She'd put them together and
put caramel icing on it.
"She always made that
cake, and I knew how
good they were," Mills
said. "I bought every cake
she made, except for one
or two. Her cakes were
homemade."
One time, when
Southeast Energizer Glen
Dickerson decided to "take
the cake," Mills was having
none of it. A bidding
war ensued between the
two members, elevating
the price of Kelly's famed
caramel cake to top dollar. In
the end, Mills won out.
"It was all for a good cause,"
said Mills, with a big smile.
"Energizers supports so many
good charities."
