7 SAFETY In 2017, Alabama Power remained commied to continuing to take all the right steps to keep safety its highest priority for employees. This commitment was demonstrated through several changes and initiatives throughout the company. CEO Mark Crosswhite, chairman of the Central Safety Commiee (CSC), led efforts to identify steps that can be taken to prevent employee injuries. The CSC took a more in- depth look at the root causes of injuries, and provided corrective actions to prevent future accidents. Jennifer Bailey, director of Safety & Health of Operations for Southern Company, assumed the additional responsibility of serving as director of Safety & Health for Alabama Power in September. "Jennifer's proven leadership in safety makes her a tremendous asset as we continue to keep safety at the forefront of all we do," said Jeff Peoples, vice president of Human Resources and Ethics. The Operational Safety Steering Commiee (OSSC), formed in 2016, was initially charged to get the most "at-risk" organizations to help address problem areas and understand the daily safety challenges workgroups face. In 2017, John Hudson, senior vice president of Marketing and Business Development, joined the OSSC to represent the 2,500 employees of the corporate environment. "Safety is paramount for all employees," Hudson said. "I am dedicated to helping strengthen our corporate safety efforts and to working with the team to continually reinforce safety as a core value." The company has adopted Southern Company's revised set of values, which places "Safety First" as the top priority. This year, Alabama Power is building upon its 2017 work. The 2018 safety theme combines Our Values and employees' most treasured philosophy: "Safety First: Target Zero." "In 2018, we must continue to be proactive about safety in everything we do – both at work and at home," Crosswhite said. "That means safety is always first." The 2018 Safety Plan includes significant changes to close calls, learning events, critical risks and safety rules. These process changes will simplify the safety program and keep a focus on preventing serious injuries and fatalities. This path forward will help ensure Alabama Power keeps Safety First and Target Zero top of mind to finish "every day, every job, safely" throughout 2018, Peoples said. by Sarah Reid Harris New commiee aims to keep Safety First
