ey are the "Filthy Four," the worst of the worst
invasive aquatic plants on Alabama Power lakes. ey
all grow quickly and spread easily. If le unchecked,
they can cause all sorts of problems, including:
• Create human health concerns due to large mats
that increase mosquito breeding habitat.
• Restrict recreational activities and make boating,
swimming and fishing impossible.
• Restrict water flow, which can impede irrigation,
flood control and hydroelectric operations.
• Limit biodiversity when large masses of the plant
out-compete native plant species.
• Block sunlight and reduce dissolved oxygen in the
water, which makes the water unsuitable for
aquatic organisms.
