Across the world, more than 500 species of plants and flowers rely on bats as their primary pollinator. Conservation is more critical than ever. A fungal condition called White Nose Syndrome has devastated bats across the country, causing at least 5 million to 7 million deaths in North America, according to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. "Some species are doing beer than others. Some have been heavily affected," Baker said. Southern Company has pledged $100,000 in financial support to Bats for the Future Fund, which is working on ways to minimize the impact of White Nose Syndrome. "While the work is not unique to Alabama, anything we can do to help bats will make a difference," Baker said. The blitz is an excellent way for Alabama Power to strengthen its relationships with wildlife agencies and groups, Baker said. "Anytime you can increase your knowledge, you stand a beer chance of implementing measures that help protect the species and ensure bats can continue to carry out their important role in the ecosystem for generations to come."
