16 EDUCATION teachers for consistently going over and beyond expectations," read the announcement of her nomination in The Pillars, the magazine for the College of Education and Professional Studies. "When asked about Kastala, those working with her at Griggs Elementary stated there wasn't anyone more deserving. Specifically, it was noted that self-efficacy, humility, desire for continuous learning and of course her caring nature make Kastala a truly outstanding teacher." Brown said receiving the grant was a "bucket filler." "Teaching is not easy. As a new teacher, it is easy to get overwhelmed with all the new things you have to learn, do and buy," she said. "On top of all that, you are responsible for protecting and teaching little lives. That is a lot of pressure in itself. "Just to know my hard work was noticed was such a blessing. Being able to make sure my students had everything they needed was so heartwarming." The staff at Griggs Elementary, in the Tillman's Corner community southwest of downtown Mobile, also seem to have a warm heart – toward Brown. "She goes above and beyond the call of duty and serves on several committees, one of which is the Lighthouse Leadership Team," said Principal Laura Hittson. "Although she is just beginning her career as a teacher, she exhibits the confidence and skills of a seasoned teacher who has been teaching for many years. Griggs is blessed to have Ms. Kastala Brown as a member of our family." "On behalf of my students and myself, I would like to deeply thank Alabama Power for partnering and supporting teachers and students," Brown said. "You have made a huge difference in our lives." Brown received $1,000 from Alabama Power Foundation. Brown in classroom.
