YEAR IN REVIEW JANUARY The Edison Electric Institute (EEI) announced that Alabama Power once again earned two of its prestigious emergency response awards. The company received EEI's Recovery Award for quickly restoring service to Alabama customers after Hurricane Nate, and the Assistance Award for aiding peer utilities following hurricanes Harvey and Irma. EEI's Emergency Response Awards recognize electric utilities that go the extra mile to restore service after storms or other natural disasters. Through the years, Alabama Power has received 19 EEI recovery or assistance awards – more than any other utility within the Southern Company system. …………. Alabama Power launched its Council on Culture and Inclusion (CCI) to attract, develop and retain employees of diverse backgrounds; to raise awareness of the company's diversity and inclusion challenges, strategies and successes; and to listen and respond to recommendations throughout the company to create an environment of inclusion, respect and fairness among all employees. "We know that matters of culture and inclusion are key priorities for Alabama Power and Southern Company," said Jeff Peoples, senior vice president of Employee Services and Labor Relations. "To ensure our work in this area is most effective, we have assembled a core council to focus on issues that matter to our employees." Members of the core council include Peoples; Alexia Borden, senior vice president and general counsel; Myla Calhoun, vice president of Charitable Giving and president of the Alabama Power Foundation; Scott Moore, senior vice president of Power Delivery; and Quentin Riggins, senior vice president of Governmental & Corporate Affairs. ………….. The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) bestowed one of its top annual honors on a team in Alabama Power's Environmental Affairs Lab and Field Services. EPRI's Energy and Environment Sector Technology Transfer Award for Leadership and Support Evaluating Water Quality Monitors for Flue Gas Desulfurization Wastewater was presented during the annual banquet in Tampa. The award recipients were: • Environmental Affairs Supervisor Bill Garrett. • Environmental Affairs Principal Engineer Jonathan Ponstein. • Environmental Affairs Specialist Tyler Sullens. • SCS Environmental Assessment Engineer Dorian Afanador. FEBRUARY Alabama Power Service Organization (APSO) leaders gathered to celebrate the more than 40,000 hours members volunteered for worthwhile causes across the state in 2017 and to plan ways to give back in 2018. "Life Changers is the theme of this year's meeting, and that's a wonderful phrase with so much meaning – for us and those we serve," said Zeke Smith, External Affairs executive vice president. "For so many of our fellow Alabamians, life's changes often mean they will need a helping hand – a life-changer – they never expected. How good is it that the volunteers of APSO – all of you – are there ready, willing and able to provide that helping hand." Several awards were given out to APSO members highlighting their commitment to their communities. Members also discussed ways to build on the organization's 27 years of service. ………………. Alabama Power again earned a Tree Line USA designation for its commitment to tree planting, pruning and care. It marked the 17th consecutive year the company has achieved the national award. The annual certification is awarded to public and private utilities by the Arbor Day Foundation and National Association of State Foresters for protecting and enhancing urban trees. "Trees are a critical part of Looking Back at 2018 2018 was another successful year for Alabama Power and its employees who accomplished milestones at work and in their communities, continuing to set national standards for reliability, customer service, innovation, diversity and emergency assistance to utilities nationwide. Achievements during the company's 112th year included: 1 Linemen restored power on Dauphin Island.
