84 Alabama's first Smart Neighborhood, located at Reynolds Landing in Hoover, was publicly unveiled by Alabama Power in May 2018. Today, Smart Neighborhood is meant to provide a glimpse into what residential construction may look like in 20 years, and is equipped with cutting-edge systems and appliances that give customers more control over their home's features and energy use. The microgrid's intelligent technology communicates with each home's heating, air-conditioning and water-heating systems to determine the best way to provide energy. Reynolds Landing's homes, built by Signature Homes, are models of energy-efficient features and new technology. The project includes the Southeast's first microgrid that consists of solar panels, battery storage and a backup natural gas generator. The Alabama Power Smart Neighborhood is drawing national recognition as one of the most innovative energy projects in the country. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Global Energy Institute recently launched the EnergyInnovates initiative, which showcases American innovators, projects and technologies that are shaping our energy landscape, and Reynolds Landing Smart Neighborhood was selected as its first featured project. Smart Neighborhood The Reynolds Landing project includes the first microgrid in the Southeast to support an entire residential community.
