THE RUMBLE OF EXCITEMENT SWELLS as an assembly of ele-
mentary students, wearing green Statue of Liberty
crowns, begins to chant, "Lib-ber-tee ... Lib-ber-
tee … LIBERTY!" You can hear it down the block
but, better still, you can feel it long afterward,
pulsing with passion and patriotism in your own
heart. ese third-, fourth- and fifth-grade young-
sters, most of whom have never heard of civics
and citizenship, brim with pride. ey are enthusiastic blank
slates ready for red-white-and-blue lessons in the Super
Citizen program.
What happens in the next 10 or so weeks is
nothing short of academic magic. e Super
Citizen curriculum, created by retired and student
teachers alike, blends fascinating facts with a foun-
dation of healthy American ethics. It launches at
schools around our state with the "real" Lady
Liberty Live, jazzing the kids with 45 minutes of fun history,
Children across the state learn the meaning of freedom,
civics and opportunity as they become Super Citizens
in the classroom — and beyond.
