Welcome Home The Alabama Power Foundation has awarded more than $60,000 in 2015 Gateway grants. The 33 grants will provide materials for signs to welcome visitors into cities, towns and communities across Alabama. Gateway's goal is to help revitalize communities by funding well- designed signage to greet visitors. The signs can also attract new business and industry to cities and towns. "The Gateway grant program has helped cities and towns across Alabama to present themselves in a new way," said John Hudson, president of the Alabama Power Foundation. "Whether it is promoting community spirit, encouraging tourism or welcoming economic development, the program is helping communities share their stories." The Town of Morris received a 2014 Gateway grant it used to build a sign noting the community's founding 130 years ago. "We've had such positive feedback from community members and we know the sign has been a source of excitement and pride for our area," said Kathy Bolton, president of the Morris Beautification Board. "Feedback has also come from other towns who contacted us after installation of the sign. Our goal was to set an example in promoting good design and development as the area continues to grow and we feel that the Welcome to Morris sign accomplishes what we set out to do." Now in its fourth year, the Gateway program has awarded nearly $200,000 through almost 100 grants. Gateway is one of several community programs funded by the Alabama Power Foundation.
