32 A HEART FOR HELPING EASTERN DIVISION'S LEE ACTIVE AT CAPSTONE, IN HER COMMUNITY By Gilbert Nicholson Selina Lee has plenty on her plate as Distribution general manager of Alabama Power's Eastern Division. She is also very involved with the University of Alabama College of Engineering. Lee is in the middle of two terms as board chairwoman of the Capstone Engineering Society (CES), the alumni association she has served 11 years as a board member. She is also the 2016 Outstanding Alumni Volunteer for the College of Engineering. "Selina Lee is exactly the sort of graduate we work so hard to produce," said Dean Charles Karr of the College of Engineering. "She has a heart for helping young people achieve their dreams, and that passion is evident in her generous efforts to help us provide scholarships, mentor our students and get more of our alumni involved in CES." A 1990 electrical engineering graduate, Lee has served on the Outstanding Senior Selection Committee, participated at CES networking receptions and is an alumni mentor in the Mentor Undergraduate Professional Program. As a mentor, Lee helps engineering alumni connect with juniors and seniors to guide them on their path to becoming engineers. "Of the students I have mentored, I have communicated with them on a monthly basis; had them visit Alabama Power and meet other engineers; and talk through how to be a successful employee wherever they land," Lee said. She has an easy answer for her busy involvement in UA alumni affairs. "Being an engineer has afforded me and my family opportunities beyond what I imagined as a high school student," Lee said. "For most, engineering is challenging, and I want to encourage others to stay dedicated to engineering because there are numerous rewarding careers for engineers. continued page 33 PHOTOGRAPHY by WYNTER BYRD PHOTOGRAPHY by WYNTER BYRD
