15 F or more than 35 years, Van Horne proved his strong leadership skills at Corporate Headquarters. He didn't slow down aer retiring. Horne is president of the Corporate Chapter of Energizers, the company's service organization for retirees. He also stays busy with projects for the Trussville Daybreak Rotary Club, a civic group that strengthens local businesses and schools. Horne continues to bring out the best in his community. Such is the case at Paine Elementary School in Trussville, where for the past six years Horne has read once weekly during the school year to a kindergarten class. "Van has been a fabulous asset to our class," said Paine teacher Buffy Bland. "He has been so faithful to come every week. When he comes, the kids run up and hug him. They love him." A teacher for 20 years, Bland said Horne has aended extracurricular events such as a Veterans Day program and kindergarten graduation. "He has such commitment and concern for the children," she said. "He's brought books to the children to celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday in March. At the last class of the year, he brings them cookies or other treats. It makes special memories for the kids." The reading project has enriched his life and the children's, Horne said. "It's amazing, because at the end of the year, you can see such growth in the children. They change so much and learn so much in one year." Serving as manager of General Services - Corporate Services before he retired in 2013, Horne is using his leadership skills to enhance his Energizers chapter.
