The Alabama Power Foundation has selected Seth Williams, son of Brandon Williams, Miller Steam Plant fire protection specialist, as the 2022 two-year college Presidential Scholarship winner. Seth, a graduate of Cold Springs High School who plans to attend Wallace State Community College, will be provided full tuition and fees. "I am excited to receive this scholarship because this assistance will allow me to focus on my studies rather than worrying about student loans," he said. In high school, Seth was a well-rounded leader in academics and sports. He was a class officer and member of the National Honor Society, math team and Anchor Club. He participated in track and played football, basketball and baseball. Seth credits English, usually his least favorite course, as the most valuable for his college career. "For the past two years, I took classes that required me to write lots of essays," he said. "It started as a real struggle, but through the coaching of my teachers, I became a stronger writer and storyteller." Seth said his fondest memories in high school are his experiences on sports teams. "One year in basketball, we won the county championship. Our coach had recently lost his wife, and it was a bittersweet moment. When I hugged my coach, he said his wife would have been so proud of us. I have carried that moment with me." Seth has also carried with him moments of watching his father serve in fire protection with the company and as a member of the Crane Hill Volunteer Fire Department, and Seth plans to follow a similar path. "I've been influenced by hearing my dad's stories about firefighting and watching him on the job," said Seth. "I'm planning to major in general studies to support a career in firefighting or industrial maintenance. I'm proud to be a new member of the Crane Hill Volunteer Fire Department." In his spare time, Seth likes to play video games, go fishing, ride four-wheelers and work on small engines. The Alabama Power Foundation scholarships were awarded through a competitive application process by an independent third party, Scholarship America. The evaluations were based on academic achievement, extracurricular activities, leadership roles and financial need.
