Hispanic Interest Coalition of Alabama
Provides Vital Resources for Latino
Community
Since 1999, the Hispanic Interest Coalition of Alabama,
or ¡HICA!, has served the Latino community by offering
resources, educational opportunities and a place
for people to gather and thrive. HICA was formed
to address the unique needs of the growing Latino
population in this region.
HICA seeks to meet these needs through its four main
initiatives. The Strong Families Program connects
families with advocacy, case management, information
and referrals, and supports families in crisis. The
Immigration and Access to Justice Program provides
low-cost legal services to help clients aain citizenship.
The Community Engagement and Education Program
helps Latino youths graduate high school and seek
post-secondary education. This program also provides
leadership development opportunities for women. The
Asset Building and Economic Development Program
promotes small businesses, helps them gain access to
microloans, offers tax preparation help through the IRS,
and provides financial and computer literacy classes.
It is with the support of partners like the Alabama
Power Foundation that HICA is able to offer this
programming. A 2016 grant from the foundation
supported these core initiatives.
