8 nAme: sAlvATion Army oF CoAsTAl AlAbAmA yeAr Founded: 1887 leAdership: Major Mark Brown, area commander mission: To meet basic human needs without discrimination and to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Salvation Army of Coastal Alabama provides disaster assistance, emergency shelter, transitional housing, substance abuse treatment, employment services for the homeless and emergency financial assistance to prevent homelessness. The Salvation Army shelters an average of 160 men, women and children each night. plAns For grAnT: To support individuals who are in recovery with access to healthcare, counseling, GED preparation, and educational and workforce development opportunities. nAme: brAnTWood Children's home yeAr Founded: 1917 leAdership: Kim Herbert, executive director mission: To serve neglected and abused children by providing for and supervising their education, health and social adjustment into the community. Brantwood provides a home and a family for the children it serves. plAns For grAnT: To help support Brantwood's Career SPOON course, which is a comprehensive, multilevel career development program that will offer extensive training as well as important certifications available for the food services industry. Children aging out of the foster care system often are unprepared to find and keep a job, especially in today's tight job market. This program will prepare participants for work in an industry that is among the top five in Alabama in terms of offering well- paying jobs. Youths in the Career SPOON program will earn the certifications they need to prove to employers they are job ready, and the program will provide them with connections in the region's workplaces. nAme: shelby CounTy ArTs CounCil yeAr Founded: 2005 leAdership: Terri Sullivan, founder and director of development mission: To support, nurture and promote the arts and cultural opportunities in Shelby County. The Arts Council enhances the quality of life for Shelby County residents and helps to promote economic growth and tourism. plAns For grAnT: To expand Writing Our Stories, a creative writing anti-bullying program, to seventh- grade students at Montevallo Middle School. It has been highly successful at Columbiana Middle School for four years and will continue there as well. In 2015, the program will reach an estimated 150 students within both schools. This is a 10-week program presented in partnership with Alabama Writer's Forum. nAme: inTerFAiTh minisTries yeAr Founded: 1975 Leadership: April LaFollette, interim executive director mission: The mission of Interfaith Ministries is "bringing God's people together to serve God's people in need." Through Interfaith, the faith community is empowered to serve the poor. plAns For grAnT: To purchase a mobile dental cart to support its adult dental program, one of eight outreach programs funded and administered by the organization. One in five residents in Calhoun County lives below the poverty level, putting them at risk for dental problems. Interfaith's Adult Dental Clinic is the only facility in the county in which adults can receive free dental care. The mobile dental cart will have a built-in air compressor as well as two high-speed and one low-speed handpiece connections, along with everything needed for any operation. This equipment upgrade will allow the clinic to provide more in-depth care for patients.
